Abstract

Biomass, as an energy source, must be produced, processed and used in a sustainable and efficient manner in order to optimize the process of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improve environmental protection. It is obtained from organic materials such as wood and harvest residues from agricultural production, urban waste. It can be used for heating, electricity and biofuel production. Increasing the use of biomass in the European Union can help diversify Europe's energy supply, increase the number of jobs in several sectors and protect the natural environment. It is also needed as a raw material in the production of electricity to balance variable renewable energy sources. Biomass as a raw material for obtaining energy continues to be the main source of renewable energy in the EU, with a share of almost 60%. The heating and cooling sector is the largest end user, using around 75% of total bioenergy obtained from renewable sources.
