Irrational expansion of the trading network, poor economic assessment and overindebtedness are the causes of the problems. Agrokor's business Todorić's family, led by Ivica Todorić, has been based on undisciplined lending of money on the market. Agrokor expanded rapidly in Croatia and within the region without proper control and supervision, so the costs grew, while the turnover fell when Mercator's trade chain was taken over. Big investments were spent on buying Mercator which failed to generate profits according to Agrokor's expectations. Agrokor's obligations towards investors and suppliers are currently around 5.7 billion euros. Agrokor was easily borrowing the money, without asking for expenses and interests, while credit institutions were over-exposed to credit risk. HANFA did not prevent quotations of shares and bonds for companies from Agrokor, and the Croatian National Bank (HNB) did not recognize the huge amount of false bills of exchange in the amount of 1.3 billion euros that punched the Monetary System of the Republic of Croatia. Agrokor has a loss above the equity value or a negative net worth of about 2 billion euros, while its total debt at this moment within its amounts is about 7 billion euros and is not final. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Konzum's debt to suppliers is more than 150 million euros, which is more than the amount in stocks, which means that the money has already emerged from BiH and was used in Agrokor to repay the loan.
