Sustainable urban mobility in the conditions of the green transition from conventional fuels to renewable energy sources in traffic is one of the main challenges, not only in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also in Europe and beyond. Given that more than 70% of EU citizens live in urban areas (42.7% in Bosnia and Herzegovina) they generate 23% of total CO2 emissions from transport. Urban mobility is getting slower and more demanding, as it is highly dependent on the use of conventionally fuelled cars. At the same time, it is making slow progress in transitioning to more sustainable forms of mobility. Across the European Union in 2021, 39% of road traffic fatalities occurred in urban areas. Within those areas pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists are particularly exposed to road deaths, which represents slightly less than 70% of the total number of fatalities. Due to the importance of these problems for human health, it is necessary to improve the quality of life of citizens by solving the challenges of urban mobility, such as traffic safety, air pollution, congestion, accessibility, etc. To reduce CO2 emissions by 2030 by at least 55%, it is necessary to develop sustainable mobility in cities through urban transport systems which are safe, smart, accessible, resilient and with zero emissions.
