Abstract

In the personal and professional level, people are surrounded by lots of data. The same situation exists in the public transport. With the advancement of technology, the majority of public transport passengers are connected to the internet by their devices and also to all other sources of data available to them. In public transport studies, data are collected about vehicles (speed, regularity, delays, etc.), and about passengers (entrances and exits, transfers, etc.). Experts who are dealing with the public transport want to collect the data and that the results of data processing lead to improving services. New technologies and open data are allowing the use of big data tools and can assist in better understanding of public transport users‘ needs. The tools of business intelligence and application of big data are creating more and better information for making of business decisions, while users of public transport are timely provided with only the information that they need. This paper provides an overview of experiences and trends in the use of big data tools, as well as some examples of good practice in the public transport.
