Abstract

Contemporary development of overall economic activities has caused a radical change in the development of transport services. It is a causal effect which have positively affected on the development of transport techniques and technology, which are the result of a change in the supply of transport services. Accordingly, today already we are speaking about technical and technological transport revolution. Road transport first experienced expansion and it was dominant, so it jeopardized dominant railway transport, which resulted in a significant decrease of railways in almost all transportation market segments. By various circumstances railway was unable to exploit and develop its comparative advantages over other forms of transport (independence from the weather, punctuality, regularity, low power consumption, environmental protection, etc.). On the other side, systemic flaws of railways as unimodal transport (name for transport with only one form of transport), such as lack of elasticity, rigidity, inability of shipments from door to door, etc., can be eliminated only by modern techniques and technology of combined transport. In this paper we tried briefly to explain some basic aspects of modern transport systems, and explicate the concept and importance of integrated, combined, intermodal and multimodal transport.
