A long duration of socioeconomic crisis, its depth, amplitude, reproduction and intensification with all the painful and associated manifestations and consequences still makes an insufficient warning to the "reformers" and the holders of (neoliberal) economic policy in the neighboring states indicating that something is wrong and that this alleged "development" model should be modified. Sustainable development itself (and the structure of its components) gives the highest warnings suggesting that institutional pluralism presents its imperative framework and mandatory requirement. This paper discusses the function, importance and necessity of application of institutional pluralism in the countries of Southeastern Europe as an exemplary model for sustainable economic development. It criticizes all forms of institutional monism and points to their proven disastrous consequences. Accordingly, it starts from the hypothesis that the formula of effective and sustainable development should be sought in the consistent application of real institutional pluralism. In doing so, institutional
pluralism is being observed in three basic levels: economic (as parallel functioning of market, state and ownership regulation), social (as an efficient functioning of the rule of law, political democracy, sociocultural capital and all other social subsystems) and environmental (as environmental protection regulated by the law).
