Abstract

The aim of the research is to determine how weak or non-existent demographic sustainability, of majority of municipalities / cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, threatens the spatial development sustainability itself, which should be largely based on the use of endogenous (internal) resources, especially human ones. The '' SUSTENDEMO '' model was used in this research, which was applied to the reality of Bosnia and Herzegovina in order to determine the typology of municipalities / cities according to demographic sustainability, which could be used in designing of sustainable and competitive development. All research results, as output are presented by application of GIS technology (spatial database). The survey covered all municipalities and cities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, its entities and the Brcko District. Obviously, according to the latest census in 2013, demographic sustainability is no longer ensured in many municipalities. Sustainability is guaranteed in a number of municipalities / cities, although the level of human resource development in them is very low. In the remaining municipalities / cities, most of the human capital is concentrated, so that these municipalities / cities are demographically sustainable, especially in terms of the qualitative dimension. The results are usable in communicating the final assessment, in the form of practical implementation of the required sustainable demographic and spatial development, as well as sustainable competitiveness. The results may have suggestions and recommendations that alert the community to investigate problems or an alternative that offers a better solution in the event of an existing situation.
