Abstract

A noise can be defined as unwanted, or too loud, unpleasant or unexpected sound which disturbs our daily activities. Faster rhythm of life in large urban areas affects on the increase of the environmental noise. The road traffic is mentioned as one of the main sources of the environmental noise. Millions of people are affected by the traffic noise all around the world. The traffic causes annoyance, stress and disease, and sometimes it can be fatal for human health. There are numerous relatively simple and cheap ways to reduce the traffic noise. First of all, the traffic noise must be treated seriously, as the other forms of environmental pollution, because it harms human health. The paper gives an overview of measurement results of road traffic noise from available reports of selected cities of the Republic of Serbia. Based on the review of domestic and foreign professional literature, it is given a proposal for measures to reduce the harmful effects of road traffic noise.
