This theme deals with topics related to modern propulsion systems on board merchant ships. In the content of the work, various types of ship's propulsion and their principles can be seen. Safe and reliable ship's propulsion is basic part of efficient navigation. Maritime industry is one of the most growing industries in the world which enables efficient trade of all kind of goods. This effect with growing number of new ships, modern ports and new technologies incorporated in modern maritime industry. In respect of this, seaways are becoming more complicate to operate, which results with many investments in modern navigation and telecommunication systems on board ships as well as on coast installations. The demands of shipping are challenging and it depends of both efficiency and safety. That is specially related to biggest ships and their manoeuvring and working capabilities which allows no mistakes or accidents related to human safety, maritime pollution or cargo operations. Constant education of the ship's crew is essential in solving this problems but captain of the ship, most of all, needs reliable propulsion in different conditions. That includes navigation through war zone or piracy area, ice threat area, rough sea condition and many other dangerous situations.
