The purpose of this paper is to explore why is sustainability important for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and how it can be successfully applied in their day-to-day business operations. SMEs can largely contribute to sustinability since they account for over 90% of businesses worldwide and are responsible for 50 to 60% of employment (Raynard and Forstater, 2002). SMEs also serve as an incubator for enterpreneurship, innovation and creativity and provide essential support for services and products for TNCs making their countries more attractive for foreign investors. This research represents a conceptual review of sustainable development in the business world with particular emphasis on the developing countries. This paper describes the importance of sustainability for SMEs covering the benefits and challenges in contemporary
world, sustainability management in SMEs and the importance of transparently reporting on business sustainability (financial, social and environmental performances). Therefore this research may be used to encourage companies and local governments to include a sustainability issues in their business activities as a pre-condition for long-term business success and competitiveness. The managers in SMEs can use this research as a form of education and guideline for creating a modern sustainable company through the incorporation and implementation of sustainability.
