Abstract

The European Charter of Road Traffic Safety defines a new fase in European firmness to improve Road traffic safety. Elderly drivers are vulnerable road users. Since there are no special traffic regulations for elderly drivers, their reduced psysical abilities (diminished eyesight and hearing, slower reaction time) require additional caution on the road. The fatality rate for elderly drivers aged over 75 years is more then five times higher than the average, and their injury rate is twice as high. The severity of injuries can be limited by certain safety measures. In European Union ADVISORS(Action for advanced Driver assistance and Vehicle control systems Implementation, Standardisation, Optimum use of the Road network and Safety) project analysed the potential impact of advanced driver assistance systems on driving behaviour and road safety. This article s goal is to present potential measures to advance elderly people s road traffic safety and to consider their aapliance in our region.
