Abstract

The concept of sustainable development implies a process towards achieving a balance between economic, social and environmental requirements to ensure the needs of the current generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Enviroment is taken for grantes by many people, but the pressure on the limited resources of the Earth is growing at unprecedented rates. If this continues, future generations will be deprived of a heritage that belongs to them. After more than four decades of policy- making at EU level and a large part of our environment is protected by European legislation. However, the problem of implementation of these policies remains unresolved, which is a key challenge that needs to be addressed to ensure that all have the full benefit of these laws.
