Although roundabouts are carried out as more favorable solution of intersections, there is noticeable distinctiveness in dimensioning and modeling caused by insufficient knowledge of the essential requirements for design and traffic safety due to poor education/training of users and some designers. The result is a problematic state of functional efficiency, traffic safety and level of service on some roundabouts in urban areas, and these are the main reasons and incentives to be systematically researched. According to some previous results of domestic and foreign researchs of functional efficiency and traffic safety of roundabouts, and applicable guidelines, the appropriate method to optimize the functional
efficiency and traffic safety of roundabouts was chosen. The method is based on the use of a set of methods/approaches of multi-criteria optimization with the aim of optimizing the basic design elements of the roundabout. To determine the roundabout capacity Kimber method, recommendations of HCM (other traffic parameters/level of service) and predicting the
number of traffic accidents by Maycock and Hall is used. The paper, in addition to presenting the need for development of method, represents the structure of the method that will be verified at the single-lane roundabout with four single-lane approaches carried out in an urban environment. Research results and final conclusions will be presented in future papers.
