Electronic toll collection on highways, bridges, and tunnels significantly reduces collection time which results in many positive effects. It reduces queuing time for users of traffic infrastructures. It also reduces fees compared to payment in cash or by cards. As this type of payment allows concessionaries lower operating costs they can afford to reduce the fee due to stuff reduction. The community benefit as well as this type of payment reduces the number of vehicles in lines thus reducing air pollution. If tolls could be paid electronically by passengers from other countries they would be more satisfied because they would wait in lines less and reach their destinations in short period of time. Furthermore, they would pay less, and wouldn’t have to bother with currency exchange. The aim of this paper is to present basic features of the concept of interoperable electronic toll collection CARDME. Toll collection applying this concept enables electronic fee collection from all electronic toll collection deviceholders in Europe, regardless of concessioner in Europe who provides this kind of service. The purpose of this paper is to encourageconcessionairesof transport infrastructuretoadaptitstechnological solutionsforelectronic 328 328 toll collectionto enableinteroperability ofelectronic toll collection process in Europe.
