Abstract

During centuries road transport has proved its importance in contemporary society. The distribution process of goods in the modern economy, as well as the transport of passengers have been unthinkable without road transport. According to reports of the European Commission, more than 3 million tons of kilometers has been achieved in the EU27 and EU -28 road transport. This statistic raises the question of how this form of transport of goods and people affects the quality of life, and what is its impact on sustainable development. Problem of sustainable transport dates back to the last century, with the rapid development of the industry. According to reports of the World Health Organization and the World Bank, the impact of road transport on the quality of life is high. For this reason, planners and managers of transportation of goods and passengers are required, together with the World Commissions, to a serious and responsible way to approach this problem. This paper summarizes the longtime research on the role and importance of information technology, which are now readily available, in the field of planning and organization of road transport of goods and passengers. Modern information tools play a major role in all forms of transport, and as such are essential tools of experts who deal with transportation problems.
Thanks to them, it is possible to reduce the amount of exhaust gas, to predict risk, reduce costs and affect the quality of modern life while respecting the basic principles of the concept of sustainability
