Transportation costs are incorporated into every product and service, and the rationalization of the transport system indirectly affects the competitiveness of products and the quality of social life. The rationalization of the transport system begins by optimizing each individual transport chain. The application of multimodal transportation system is the basis for the rationalization of transport chains, through exploiting the competitive advantages of each mode of transport. Competitive analysis presented in this paper showed that the predominant role of the European Union have road and sea traffic. Despite numerous shortcomings that are related to road traffic as well as high energy consumption and pollution of the environment, he is able to retain a leadership role primarily due to the great elasticity. The ability to be able to transport any quantity of goods to any distance and delivery of goods "door to door" contribute to gain a crucial advantage over other modes of traffic. The European Union imports large quantities of oil and raw materials that require high-capacity means of transport and the most suitable for the transport of funds to water traffic. In addition to the transport capacity intended for transporting mass and low costs significantly affect the use of means of transport water traffic.
