Abstract

In the contemporary context of climate change and the increasing demand for environmentally friendly food production, the sustainability of small agricultural holdings has become a key issue in agroeconomics. The aim of this paper is to explore the economic challenges faced by small farms during the green transition process and to analyze their potential integration into
modern agroecological value chains. The research focuses on the cost analysis of transitioning to sustainable practices, the availability of subsidies and support schemes, market access, and the role of digital technologies in enhancing the competitiveness of small producers. Using a case study approach, field data from three different regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina were analyzed. Special attention is given to the economic viability of production under increasingly stringent EU environmental requirements, which is particularly relevant in the context of forthcoming integration processes.
