Abstract

The realization of the fundamental values of the European Union is based on democracy and equality, and is becoming increasingly prominent as a demand of feminist and democratic actors. Gender equality requires action in many aspects, especially in the fight against violence against women. The challenges of diverse understandings of gender and intersectional insights are complex problems, often in their infancy, both in the member states and in the countries committed to supporting their membership in the European Union. The problems do not only relate to the diverse understanding of gender, which recognizes only men and women, but much wider, which causes an intertwined effect. The paper provides insight into the above issue, inspired by the vision of an inclusive and diverse democracy, but also the protection of the rights of the vulnerable, in order to improve their lives. The paper considers the issue of endangering gender equality and democracy, which requires the appropriate establishment of a legal system and action in accordance with it, or its respect by all actors, without exception, in order to establish a civil society of democracy and equality.
