This paper presents the characteristics of signal attenuation at the physical layer of IoMT systems. The first two layers of the IoMT system (the physical PHY layer and the MAC data layer) are regulated by the IEEE 802.15.6 standard. In accordance with this standard, radio signal attenuation caused by the human body should be considered as an additional factor, alongside frequency and the distance between the transmitting (Tx) and receiving (Rx) antennas. The paper describes several different scenarios, as well as simulation results under realistic conditions for these scenarios. The scenarios differ in terms of sensor placement, the frequency bands they use, and the location of sensor installation relative to the patient’s body. Based on the simulation results, the authors propose optimal solutions in terms of energy consumption optimization.
