Abstract

Declaring a pandemic of the COVID-19 virus, in early 2020, tourist movements around the world stopped due to the ban on international travel, which affects over 90% of the world's population. Although very uncertain, early projections by the World Tourism Organization - UNWTO for 2020 suggest that international arrivals could fall by 20 to 30% compared to 2019. Restriction of movement as a measure to combat the pandemic has significantly affected air travel, cruises and accommodation. In this paper, we will present the impact of previous epidemics / pandemics and other types of global crises on tourism, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism in the world with special reference to the Republic of Croatia.
