Purpose of this paper is to point out importance of constant merchandise tracking in transportation and technologies which make it possible. Transportation today is part of logistics, and logistics is a place of reducing costs. Accordingly, function of logistics is to ensure expeditious, secure, accurate and enviromental friendly merchandise transport with lowest-price possible. That is not simple, so initiation of new ITS systems is necessary. Most of those systems are related to merchandise tracking in transportation. Constant tracking is essential in modern logistics. It is necessary to have communication with goods so the operators could know their location. It is important for planning next processes related with goods in real time. Of course, it leads to lowering overall expenses in transport because dynamic variable route creation is possible. Just that is one of the main goals od japanese system Just in time which intends reduce usage of warehouses, for what is necessary secure and continuous merchandise and raw material transpot. By using modern technologies it is possible to find out location of merchandise and estimated time of arrival in real time.
