Abstract

Excessive use of fossil fuels should be reduced on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina in order to reduce the excessive CO2 emissions, to avoid environmental pollution, the emergence of greenhouse effect and global warming. The task of environment-conscious population is to diminish the negative impact on the environment and to create optimal conditions for healthy living. Earth sheltered house is an ideal housing solution because it meets the conditions set by the ethics, ecology, economy and energy. It is energy efficient, financially affordable, enjoyable, economical, environmentally sustainable and therefore is a good concept for the present and for the future. Although this construction system has been used ages before, today it is still seen as something unusual, far from modern human culture and design. In the study the graphs show the results of energy consumption for heating and cooling objects buried in the ground with exposed southern facades, and compared with conventional above-ground objects. The simulations are focused on the impact of soil cover layers and thickness of thermal insulation in accordance with Polish climate conditions, because this type of building is yet not present in our area. Results show significantly lower energy requirements in earth sheltered houses. Thus, the case presented shows that the construction of this type of home offers a modern environment with all the features of green engineering.
