The importance of environmental protection as a common good of general interest is installed in the fundamental projection of European Union policies, which coincides with the trend of expressed environmental awareness on a global level. Environmental protection through personal and collective responsibility is a response to the expansion of environmental destruction which causes significant damage to the environment and human health. The adverse impact of people on the environment can be limited by changing the behavior of people, and by changing the technology wich they use. Considering that the economy will play a significant role in the health of the planet, the task of businessmen will be to ensure sustainable development in meeting human needs while preserving the environment. The basic instruments of environmental policy are: legal regulatory measures (legislation), economic - financial measures (market regulation) and self-regulation, which began to develop in the early seventies of the last century. The subject of this paper is to analyze the instruments of environmental policy and environmental aspects of quality improvement activities through legislation, regulation and market self-regulation. The aim is to, looking at the key instruments of environmental policy and aspects of improving the quality of the environment through activities, point out the inevitable connection of sustainable development and healthy environment and to especially emphasize that the respect and treatment towards principles and the principles of sustainable development is essential for the preservation and protection of the living environment and natural resources, for the present and future inhabitants of our planet.
