The fourth industrial revolution (or industry 4.0) brought a shift in manufacturing. Driven by use of artificial intelligence (AI), automation and internet of things (IoT) manufacturing systems are evolving toward smart factories without minimal human intervention. This paper offers a review of AI and automation that is currently being adopted across different manufacturing sectors focusing on predictive maintenance, quality control and digital twins. Drawing on academic studies, industry reports and market analysis from the period of 2020 to 2025, review maps out technological foundations, deployment strategies and documented outcomes. The paper also takes a critical look at the barriers that slow progress. Data quality issues, workforce skill gap, cybersecurity risks and resistance to change are the most common ones. Overall, the findings point that manufacturing sector has moved well beyond experimental phase, still there is considerable ground to cover before reaching full industry 4.0 potential.
