Metal damage due to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) occurs relatively frequently, involving various mechanisms and processes. This paper investigates the impact of SCC on the mechanical properties of a service-exposed catalytic reformer tube made of heat-resistant austenitic-carbide alloy HK-40. Laboratory mechanical tests indicate that the microstructural state—characterized by an austenitic matrix with carbide segregates in the form of bands along grain boundaries (intergranular corrosion)—combined with tensile stresses, significantly reduces the toughness of the ASTM A297 HK-40 cast material.
