Abstract

Intention to leave the organization (ITL) is one of the key indicators of workforce stability in the healthcare sector. This study aimed to examine ITL among healthcare workers in the public health sector of the Sarajevo Canton and to determine how sociodemographic and professional characteristics predict variation in ITL. The research used a quantitative, cross‑sectional design; data were collected via an online questionnaire distributed across 12 public healthcare institutions, with a total sample of N = 682 healthcare workers. Intention to leave was measured using an adapted version of the TIS‑6 scale (Bothma & Roodt, 2013; Cronbach’s α = 0.966). The mean ITL score was M = 1.90, with a positively skewed distribution. One‑way ANOVA with Bonferroni post‑hoc tests revealed that only professional position was a statistically significant predictor: dentists reported the highest ITL (M = 2.44), while pharmacists reported the lowest (M = 1.42). Differences by gender, age, work experience, income, and most status variables (resident, subspecialist, consultant) were not statistically significant, except for specialist status. Hypotheses about the effects of income (H1), age (H2), and resident status (H4) were not supported, whereas the hypothesis on differences by professional profile (H3) was confirmed. The findings suggest a need for differentiated staff retention strategies according to professional profiles in public healthcare institutions of the Sarajevo Canton.
