Gender equality in the protection and improvement of the living environment implies the active inclusion of women in decision-making processes on ecology, urban planning and sustainable development. Although women around the world, including in our region, bear a large part of the burden of climate change and household resource management, they are often underrepresented in institutions that create environmental policies. Gender equality of women is not only a matter of justice and realization of rights, but also a key prerequisite for social, economic, political and environmental progress. Equal participation of women and men in all aspects of environmental protection, and thus health and quality of life, which contributes to building a fairer society, increases economic growth and productivity, reduces poverty and strengthens social cohesion. Communities and societies that nurture gender equality are better prepared to respond to global challenges, such as climate change, economic crises and social inequality. Research on the perception of women at greater risk of discrimination on gender equality provides a comprehensive insight into women's attitudes and experiences regarding the protection and improvement of the living environment. Quantitative research was conducted by surveying a representative sample of 50 women, using a pre-prepared questionnaire. The survey included questions about the perception of gender equality, experiences of discrimination, attitudes about various aspects of women's lives and expectations from the state. Qualitative research was made possible by four focus groups organized in different environments in the city of Kruševac, including women of different ages, education and social status, for a deeper understanding of attitudes and engagement in the protection and improvement of the living environment.
