Abstract

This paper describes some of the basic recommendations for improving traffic safety in school
areas, such as the introduction of intelligent transport systems. The introduction of these systems has a
significant impact on reducing vehicle speeds, especially on road sections that apply exclusively to
populated areas. Intelligent transport systems represent a significant shift in the functioning of road traffic.
These systems have the possibility of installation in vehicles and road infrastructure. The application of
intelligent transport systems enables an optimal solution for the functioning of traffic.
It is especially emphasized how and in what way it is possible to introduce intelligent transport systems
in school zones. The main task of this paper is to define safe roads to school in accordance with regulations
and the real needs of students. Intelligent transport systems contribute to both general traffic safety and
the safety of children in school zones. By creating conditions for the implementation and proper
application of these systems in practice, traffic safety is moved to a significantly higher level compared to
the functioning of the transport system without their support.
