Abstract

The development of smart cities based on sustainability principles requires the integration of advanced technologies that connect energy, transportation, and information systems. This paper analyzes the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in optimizing the operation of smart intersections powered by renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind systems, with a particular focus on improving traffic safety and efficiency. The research is based on the use of machine learning models that process data collected from sensors on traffic flows, energy consumption, and weather conditions. Based on these data, dynamic traffic signal control is enabled, reducing traffic congestion and improving traffic flow, which directly contributes to increased road user safety and reduced CO₂ emissions. Special emphasis is placed on the role of AI in decarbonization processes through more efficient energy management and greater integration of renewable energy sources. The application of these solutions enables predictive management of energy resources, reduction of losses, and optimal distribution of energy within urban networks. This contributes to the development of green and energy-efficient cities, where smart intersections represent key elements of modern infrastructure. The results indicate significant potential of an integrated approach in improving the transportation system, safety, and overall sustainability of urban environments.
