This paper presents the bacics of building road tunnels with special reference to the construction of the Zenica tunnel on the highway of Corridor Vc. Tunnel construction technology includes the following three basic groups of underground works: tunnel excavation, substructure works (primary support) and construction of secondary tunnel lining. The most important feature for the selection of construction technology is the geology of the rock mass through which the tunnel passes. Due to the changing physical and mechanical properties of the terrain, NATM (New Austrian Tunneling Method) mining technology was chosen as the optimal technology for excavating road tunnels. At low overhead heights above the tunnel pipe and when building portal buildings or tunnel galleries, the "cut and cover" method of tunnel construction is used. The paper gives a special review of the construction of the Zenica tunnel, which undergoes very complex geological and tectonic conditions.
